Sign, banner projects making progress

Image
Residents may see more evidence of the village’s rebranding effort as plans for new gateway signs, additional banners and street signs are set to start making more of an appearance.             Banners bearing the new buffalo logo and “Smart. With Heart” mantra have started appearing on village roadways and the village has been touting merchandise with the new branding in the past 12 months.             The goal, village officials say, is to enhance community identity, pride and engagement. The schedule for the rollout of the various brand elements is fluid and is dependent on variables for each phase.             For example, the installation of banners, done by the Department of Public Works, is based on the cost of materials for the actual banner and installation. Resident wants first responder tribute at Clove Park

Image
Plans for the long-awaited park at The Clove, cleverly dubbed Clove Park, are due, village officials say, within a couple of months.             Debbie Salvesen is waiting with eager anticipation.             Salvesen isn’t a Village Board member, nor a village staff member, or a committee member.             She’s a resident on a mission.             While the village has forked over more than $100,000 to consultants to design the plot, which is just more than an acre, in The Clove Salvesen has an idea which she submitted to the village when it held an open house to generate ideas in July of last year.             Her idea? It doesn’t have anything to do with playground equi...

In addition to fielding youth soccer teams, they are the governing body for all soccer games played in Hamburg             According to Thomas Gansauge Schwaben’s director of coaching, the club has been practicing an international exchange program with the Hamburg club since 2012.             Members of the Schwaben AC spent 10 days visiting Germany in July. The Hamburg team’s visit to Schwaben AC from Oct. 19 -29, included soccer games with neighboring clubs, and a game against the Chicago Fire at Schwaben’s Buffalo Grove facility. The Germans also visited German consulate, Stevenson High School, Willis Tower, took an architectu...

New signs of the times

The Village Board Monday approved $129,000 for engineering consulting for new gateway signage at locations around the village.             The new signs will likely incorporate the village’s new Green and White Buffalo and the “Smart. With Heart” slogan adopted by the village in 2024.             In a memo to the Board, Village Engineer Kyle Johnson and Director of Communications and Engagement Molly Gillespie, noted that “These costs were programmed in the 2025 budget, with the anticipation that a design and plan would be laid out this year, setting up multiple years of construction and implementation. The initial evaluation of the bridge signage is also included in this agreement; however, a full design will likely require an amendment to cover those costs as it cannot be fully conceptualized at this time. Within the 2025 budget $250,000 was budgeted to begin this ...

His leadership path continued as he rose through the ranks to Sergeant in 2011, Lieutenant in 2016, and most recently Deputy Chief of Operations in 2022.             “I am incredibly grateful for the relationships and community partnerships I’ve developed over the course of my career in Buffalo Grove,” Rodriguez said. “The professionalism and sincere passion for community safety that our officers show daily...

Family is behind Panda Express

Image
When Panda Express opened last Tuesday, no doubt there were some folks who rolled their eyes, sighed and bemoaned the fact that it’s “another fast-food place.”    At first glance, it may seem that way, because that’s the label dropped on “fast casual dining.” Panda Express, however, has one difference. It’s family owned. Not just the Buffalo Grove location, but all 2,600 worldwide restaurants remain under the umbrella of the Panda Express, Inc based out of California where the Cherng family opened its first restaurant in 1983. Each location has a subtle difference to it, something noticeable by the artwork on the walls, which is a daunting task when you have 2,600 facilities.   There is, to no surprise, the seemingly standard corporate plaque that adorns each unit and, quite simply says, “Welcome to our family’s Chinese kitchen,” It’s subtle, but it re-enforces the fact that Panda Express not only has an Asian menu, but Asian root...

Vernon Library adopts four-year strategic plan

The Vernon Area Public Library District Board of Trustees have officially adopted a Strategic Framework that will guide the activities of the library over the next four years. The action came at Board’s March 18 meeting. According to a press release issued by the Library, key activities highlighted in the plan include working with an architect to maximize public use of the library building and grounds and looking into a shared library catalog to provide patrons with access to more materials. Other action items include expanding the “Library of Things” (equipment that patrons can check out) and maker-type offerings for content creation. “As this library district completes its 50th year of stellar service to this community, this Strategic Framework will give us a strong start on another half-century of operational excellence,” Library Director Anne Rasmussen said. “We feel good about this plan,” Rassmussen added. “It's an investment in our future. It’s doable, it’s lofty, a...

Women helping women focus of new organization

Image
Four area students have formed a non-profit organization that strives to educate and provide supplies to women in underprivileged areas.             Big deal, right?             It is considering their goal is to provide “sanitary pads to 500 million individuals in underprivileged populations while also promoting menstrual health education, sensitization, and de-stigmatization campaigns related to menstruation.”             That has been the mission of “Every 28 Days,” started in March of 2023 by (pictured from top to bottom)  Shruti Govindarajan of Buffalo Grove, Amrutha Venkat of Palatine and sisters Nishika and Niyathi Girish of Palatine. Since its founding, Every 28 Days has been trying to target rural areas worldwide, focusing on underprivileged populations with inaccessibility to resources.             It’s fitting that Every 28 Days is focusing on public he...

Safety, truck traffic keys to BG Road widening opposition

Image
A scheduled meeting   of the Lake County Public Works and Transportation Committee may shed light on the plans for the proposed widening of Buffalo Grove Road between Illinois Rt. 22 and U.S. Rt. 45. Opponents of the project are hoping there will be revisions discussed at the Jan. 10 meeting that will show a scaling back of the plans for the project. Key members of the opposition group cite safety, environmental impact and increased traffic, especially truck traffic, as their key concerns. The project was unveiled at a May 24 public forum sponsored by the Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) which, organizers say, drew around 100 people, which they say is more than most project-based forums. Since that time, they say more than 300 people have voiced opposition to the project, mostly through the  group’s website  that includes its 1,650 word   “declaration” ,  basically a petition, that provides considerable discussion about their objections. The...
