New signs of the times

The Village Board Monday approved $129,000 for engineering consulting for new gateway signage at locations around the village.

The new signs will likely incorporate the village’s new Green and White Buffalo and the “Smart. With Heart” slogan adopted by the village in 2024.

In a memo to the Board, Village Engineer Kyle Johnson and Director of Communications and Engagement Molly Gillespie, noted that “These costs were programmed in the 2025 budget, with the anticipation that a design and plan would be laid out this year, setting up multiple years of construction and implementation. The initial evaluation of the bridge signage is also included in this agreement; however, a full design will likely require an amendment to cover those costs as it cannot be fully conceptualized at this time. Within the 2025 budget $250,000 was budgeted to begin this planning as well as start implementing signage in late 2025.

In an email to the Buffalo Grove Report, Gillespie said that “There are currently six gateway signs (Western limits of Dundee, eastern limits of Dundee, southern limits of Arlington Heights Road, northern limits of Buffalo Grove Road, eastern limits of Half Day Road, and eastern limits of Lake Cook Road). In addition, a seventh sign was damaged and removed from the Lake Cook Road and Arlington Heights Road intersection years ago. We. are interested in adding signs to other prominent entry points, such as on Deerfield, Aptakisic, and McHenry Roads to name a few.”

One of the new signs may be on the pedestrian overpass on McHenry Road (Illinois Rt. 83).  The village, however, will need to work out details for placing that sign there with the Illinois Dept. of Transportation (IDOT).
