Deputy Chief retiring after 29 years of service

Deputy Police Chief Michael Rodriguez is retiring from the Buffalo Grove Police Department on May 2, 2025, after nearly 29 years of distinguished service.

Rodriguez began his career in Buffalo Grove in 1996 as a patrol officer and went on to serve in a variety of roles, including more than nine years as a criminal investigator, two years as an undercover narcotics agent assigned to a State Police Task Force, and as Corporal in the patrol division. His leadership path continued as he rose through the ranks to Sergeant in 2011, Lieutenant in 2016, and most recently Deputy Chief of Operations in 2022.

“I am incredibly grateful for the relationships and community partnerships I’ve developed over the course of my career in Buffalo Grove,” Rodriguez said. “The professionalism and sincere passion for community safety that our officers show daily, coupled with the tremendous community support we receive, is what made my time here so enjoyable.”

Throughout his tenure, Rodriguez was known for his commitment to professionalism, innovation, and community engagement. He played a key role in advancing initiatives related to traffic safety, crisis response, and community-police relations. His focus on mentorship and officer development helped shape a strong internal culture of service and integrity within the department

Rodriguez is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, all three of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command leadership programs and holds a master’s degree in law enforcement and justice administration. Rodriguez is also a Certified Police Executive and a member of both the Illinois and International Associations of Chiefs of Police. His service has been recognized with numerous awards, including a Life-Saving Award, the ILACP Rising Shields of Law Enforcement Award, and international recognition for his community outreach efforts.

“Deputy Chief Rodriguez has been a tremendous leader and mentor whose contributions to our department and the Buffalo Grove community will have a lasting impact,” Police Chief Brian Budds said. “We extend our deepest gratitude and warmest wishes to Deputy Chief Rodriguez for a fulfilling and well-earned retirement.”
